Indy Fiber Arts is a group of fiber artists from central Indiana who come from diverse artistic backgrounds including quilting, art education, garment construction and design, beading, mixed media and computer graphics. We meet together regularly for the purpose of expanding our artistic visions, originality and knowledge of our media as we express ourselves through fiber. Our goals now include artistic growth, more accomplished employment of techniques, and the discovery of our internal resources both as individuals and as a group. Part of that journey is to share what we have made with others by exhibiting our works together.

Eighteen textile artists will be on display throughout the Indiana Humanities during the month of December in downtown Indianapolis. Please join us for a showcase of artists who specialize in surface design on textiles, art quilts, mixed media, hand-dyeing, hand-painting, stamping, hand embroidery and beading. “Envisioning the Word,” an exhibition of spiritually expressive work by award-winning artist Linda Witte Henke, is on display through November 19 at Christ Church, 600 North Ford Road in Zionsville.
Henke creates mixed-media art expressive of spiritual themes, sacred texts, and theological reflections.

Her “Envisioning the Word” collection features works that explore biblical texts and themes, from Genesis through Revelation. The exhibition is sponsored by the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in conjunction with its “One Word, Many Voices” event scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at Christ Church.

Henke’s work is displayed in juried solo, group, and invitational exhibitions in Europe, Asia, and North America. Images of her work appear in books, magazines, and journal articles, as well as on websites and in on-line exhibitions. Her work resides in parish, corporate, and private collections in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Henke, a graduate of Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, pastored congregations in the Denver area before devoting full-time energies to her textile art. In addition to her exhibited work, she maintains a full schedule of commissioned projects, most of which are purposed for liturgical use. Redman selected for Seasonal Palette Exhibit

Daren Redman of Nashville, Indiana has been selected as an artist for the Seasonal Palette SAQA sponsored exhibition.

Thirty-eight artists will be on display in an interior gallery of the IQF quilt shows. Each quilt will measure 78" high by 32" wide.
The exhibit will be on display at these shows:
International Quilt Festival Houston, Texas, USA, George R. Brown Convention Center, November 1-4, 2012, Preview October 31.
International Quilt Festival Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, Duke Energy Center, April 2013.

It is the blue mixed media piece which includes stitched appliques and fabric tubes on the surface. The gallery is at 2 West Main St. in Greenfield, Indiana. During the months of September and October, the Creative Arts and Event Center will be filled with the fabulous art of INfiber, an association of fiber artists in central Indiana. These artists specialize in studio art quilts, wearable art, surface design, soft sculpture and art dolls, weaving, and fiber mixed media. Techniques employed include hand-dyeing and hand-painting of fabrics, discharge, printing, stamping, batik, machine and hand embroidery, and beading in both 2D and 3D expressions. The Creative Arts Gallery (the dining area of the Creative Arts and Event Center) will be filled with their work, as will the special exhibit section of Crazy Lake Art Gallery. Redman and Mitchell in the Glick Eye Institute Public Art

Two SAQA Indiana members now have their art in the Indiana University School of Medicine's new Glick Eye Institute.

Daren Redman and Carole Mitchell were accepted as artists to display their quilted textile art. Fifty one works of art are on loan or gifted to the new 77,000 square foot building.

Carole's circular "eye" quilt is on display on the 3rd floor and Daren's "Perugia Rooftop" is on loan in the 3rd floor conference room. Daren also created and gifted a quilted wallhanging, "Color Fields" designed just for the niche outside the 3rd floor elevator.

Carole and Daren attended the dedication on Friday, August 19 in downtown Indianapolis.

CALL FOR ENTRIES NEWS

All Indiana members of the Surface Design Association (SDA) and the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) are encouraged to participate in the joint exhibition scheduled for December 7-30 at the Indiana Humanities Council, 1500 N. Delaware Street in Indianapolis.

Each artist may submit two works; there is no entry fee. Entries may be a maximum of 48 inches per side. All accepted works must be ready to hang using artist-provided slats or other hardware. A label including the artist's name and the title of the work must be securely attached on the back bottom corner of the work.

A prospectus will be e-mailed to all SAQA members by mid August. Any questions in the meantime,
please contact exhibition curator Daren Redman (darenredman@gmail.com). Entries must be received by November 1.

Daren is making arrangements to have your art dropped off downtown prior to the December 7th hanging date or you can mail it to her at:

All Indiana members of both organizations are also encouraged to participate in the opening reception for the exhibition scheduled for Friday, December 9.

The Art of Felt Making Session 2 April 29 – June 3 (6 weeks)
Felt is humankind’s first fiber. It starts with nothing more than a loose cloud of wool. Using only warm, soapy water and skillful manipulation, the wool can be transformed into beautiful and useful felt art wearables and sculptures. The class will concentrate on creating art wearables made with flat pieces of handmade felt. No experience required.
Session 2 April 29 – June 3 Week One: Nuno felting Week Two: Lattice and Surface design Week Three: 3-D Hollow Forms Week Four: Silk Paper Week Five : Cobwebbing with Wensleydale wool Week Six: Triangular Bag
Fridays, 2 - 4 pm Cost: $120/$145 (member/non-member) Lab Fee: $20 Student Supply List: Rubber Gloves, 2 Towels, 1 Plastic Bag, 1 Smock. Students should be aware that we will be using wool, ivory soap and hot water in the felting process.
About the Instructor:
Paula Scott-Frantz started exploring the wool into felt process almost a decade ago. Composing natural and manmade materials into surface design is one of her trademarks. "Helping people feel the joy of their worth through their own creativity" is another.
Paula is former Lead Artist of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Paula sells her work at the By Hand Gallery in Bloomington, IN and The Art Venue in Bloomington, IN, and participates in art fairs and festivals around the state.

As fabric and sewing lovers, we leap continents and centuries in our appreciation of beautiful and skillfully-made quilts, weaving, and needlework. We’ve all encountered gorgeous textiles from other cultures—fabric creations that filled our eyes and struck our hearts—then been left with a longing to bring that feeling in our own work. But how?
The two of us, Ellen and Kate, have dug deeply into our own creative processes and developed specific ways to answer that question.

Responding Creatively to World Textiles
In this two-session workshop, we share our knowledge about inspirational fabric creations from distant parts of the world and explore how each of us can respond—not just react—to them. We help you build the skills that bring forth your own imaginative responses. Through a simple, step- by-step process, you can learn to enhance your creativity and bring engaging new elements into your work.

Thread: The Third Dimension:

Level: Suitable for all levels (students need to be familiar with their sewing
machine and free-motion sewing)

Description:
This class will enable you to explore using thread as a drawing tool. You will
be encouraged to step out of your comfort zone in the following way;

• Loosening up your approach to stitching
• Exploring the importance of thread
• Color selection; the discovery that unexpected or ‘weird’color
combinations can surprise and delight you
• Exploring how color is affected by its environment and can be used to
emphasize or neutralize shape

Bob likes to teach in a way that brings out the individual in each
student. He doesn't want to end up with a class of clones, believing
instead that every student has their own unique way of working and a
very personal feeling for what they’re seeking to achieve. He’s able to
draw students out of their comfort zone and inspire them to take what
they have to offer in their own direction. Bob fosters problem solving.
Students inevitably face problems at some (if not many) stages of
process and he wants them to be able to work things through and come
up with solutions. He feels most students don't give themselves
enough credit for their potential and wants them to develop on a very
personal level, rather than being spoon fed. Group and individual
critiques are always a feature of the class, encouraging students to
look, reflect and extract the learning they've had, and how to take it
forward.

More about Bob Adams

After a career as an art teacher, Bob now finds nothing more satisfying (or
scary) than expressing himself on canvas or cloth... or teaching discharge,
dye and stitch processes across the USA and internationally. His work has
been selected for many juried and invitational exhibitions - including three
Quilt National shows.

Bob’s journey has been fascinating…

He was originally inspired by a dedicated art teacher as a seventh grade
student at Junior High school. The encouragement he received made him
determined to pursue art and he gained his BS from Butler University,
Indianapolis, Indiana and John Herron Art Institute in 1965. In 1969 he
earned his MA from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Earning a living as a practicing full time artist has always been a challenge,
so Bob decided to pursue a career as an art teacher, giving back the
inspiration and support he’d received to a new generation of students. His
move into fiber was partially influenced by his wife Natalie. A weekend quilt-
maker, Natalie freely admitted that she had “no sense of color and
determined ‘value’ by the price of a fabric”. Bob began to help out with
decision-making on the quilts Natalie was making and became fascinated by
the flexibility that fabric offered and the quality of line that free-motion
stitching generated.

Going to exhibitions and shows enabled Bob to realize that he could also
create the fabrics that went into the quilts he was making. He therefore
spent a great deal of his vacation time taking classes in order to develop
understanding and skill at using dyes and textile paints on cloth – something
that also allowed him to use his drawing and painting skills. The ability to
create and use hand-crafted cloth motivated his quilt-making to such a
degree that he took a year off from work to focus on becoming a fiber artist.
It was during this time that he saw discharge techniques being used on
cloth. Early experiments at home (initially using bleach) made Bob realize
that he could achieve a quality of mark with discharge that he’d previously
found elusive with dye paints.

Discharge techniques using bleach and Thiox on black or hand-dyed cloth
have now become a hall mark of his style, which over the years has moved
away from the early inspirations of life drawing and landscape, to a more
abstract feel with an emphasis on color and line. He doesn’t feel right when
he’s not working and can’t be away from color, line, shape and problem-
solving for very long. In his art, he can lose himself.

The following extract from ‘The Art of Quilting’ featured on PBS sums up
how Bob feels about making art and making quilts…

“The minute I started painting with dye I was pretty much off to the races.
That was all I needed. When I first started, stitching was a way to attach
pieces. Now the thread is a really integral part of my work. It makes a
statement and it's a serious part. I can't do without it now whereas at first I
tried to hide it because my sewing was so terrible. Now it’s what makes my
work important.

As you work on a piece it changes—starts out really soft without the
stitching and by the time I'm done, it's taken on a whole different tactile and
visual quality that I can't get with a brush and paint. Plus, you can go back
and re-work areas a lot easier and make stunning changes. With paint, you
keep putting it on and sometimes all of a sudden it turns to mud. With fabric
you can add more color on top of what you’ve got and bang, you've got a
whole different look to it. And then the stitches on top add a whole new
dimension to the piece. That's what I love about it. I just couldn't get that
with painting. The minute I learned how to paint with dye and put the thread
with it, I realized that’s what I’d been looking for. That's the part that's really
stunning to me. Even now when I go to a museum I don't see that in
paintings. The only place I see it is in the textile work.

You get into - I don't know what you call it – ‘a groove’. That's the greatest
part of art, I don't care if you paint or draw. You lose yourself and all of a
sudden you stand up and you're back to reality. It's a feeling I don't get any
other way.”

Fourteen persons assembled at Linda Henke’s Indianapolis home/studio on Thursday, September 23, for a joint gathering of SDA-Indiana and SAQA-Indiana members and prospective members.

The gathering began with words of welcome from Daren Redman, SAQA Indiana State Representative, and Linda Henke, SDA Indiana Area Representative:

Redman shared information about the SAQA Visioning Conference scheduled for May 20-21, 2011, in Denver, CO. She also highlighted “Exploring the Surface,” a November 1-30 exhibition of SAQA Indiana members’ work at the Indiana Humanities Council (1500 North Delaware in Indianapolis), and invited participation in the opening reception for this exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 5.

- Henke referenced changes taking place within the SDA, including the website redevelopment project currently underway, the recent selection of a new Director of Marketing, and provision of enhanced support for the organization’s area representatives. She also announced Confluence, the organization’s biennial conference and workshops scheduled for June 4 through 17, 2011, in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN (www.surfacedesign.org/conference.asp). SDA Indiana Area Ambassador Caryl Hancock referenced her positive experiences at previous SDA conferences and encouraged broad participation. Participants responded favorably to her inquiry about the value of the e-blast “news” she has been generating.

Participants then took turns introducing themselves, sharing examples of their work, and briefly describing the techniques and processes employed in creating it. Some participants also communicated information about exhibitions, workshops, and publications, and shared related postcards, fliers, and brochures. Announcements were made regarding Caryl Hancock’s upcoming marbling workshop at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN (www.arrowmont.org/); Kate Lenkowsky’s collaboration with Ellen Seiber in a series of workshops (and possibly a book) on Global Textiles; an October 22-24 retreat with Laura Cater Woods in Indianapolis (contact Carol Myers, www.carollmyers.com, for more information); the Voices: Women of a Certain Age exhibition , October 1-29, at the Stutz Art Space in Indianapolis; the Indiana Artisan Marketplace scheduled for April 1-17, 2011, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis (contact Karen Hampton at khampton@schenkhampton.com), and others.

Participants discussed opportunities for future activities. The idea of additional joint programming was enthusiastically received, including additional gatherings like this one (perhaps every two or three months), exhibition opportunities, and workshops. The group responded enthusiastically to one such possibility, shared by Daren Redman, of a workshop with Bob Adams (www.bobadamsart.com).

Discussion then turned to an exploration of ways for members of the two groups to be in ongoing communication with each other. Linda Henke agreed to set up a joint SDA-SAQA Yahoo Group List limited to SDA-Indiana and SAQA-Indiana members. Those interested in participating may only access the group by responding to the invitation they receive via email.

Throughout this stage of the gathering, participants had opportunity to peruse SDA and SAQA publications and to examine the SDA Swatch Collection showcasing a diverse array of surface design techniques.

The group relocated to Linda Henke’s studio space in order to participate in an indigo workshop facilitated by Daren Redman. Redman shared information about indigo, as well as the substances and processes by which it is activated for coloring fabric. She provided instruction in a Shibori method for manipulating, clamping, and tying cotton fabric into bundles that were then submerged in the indigo vat. This simple exercise produced some stunning results.

The success of this first joint gathering was evident in the energy and enthusiasm displayed by participants. One can’t help but think of the promise this holds for good things yet to come!

International Expressions

This past weekend, I (Linda Henke) had the pleasure of viewing International Expressions, the exhibition by Quilt Art International (http://www.quiltart.org.uk/) on display now through August 28 at the Minnetrista Cultural Center, 1200 North Minnetrista Parkway, in Muncie. I experienced it as a strong collection; I highly recommend it.

The exhibition, which showcases a variety of surface design techniques, includes work by Bethan Ash, Eszter Bornemisza, Elizabeth Brimelow, Jette Clover, Fenella Davies, Ann Fahy, Mary Fogg, Dirkje van der Horst-Beetsma, Inge Hueber, Sara Impey, Bridget Ingram-Bartholomaus, Val Jackson, Cherilyn Martin, Sandra Meech, Dominie Nash, Mirjam Pet-Jacobs, Karina Thompson, Janet Twinn, and Charlotte Yde. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission for non-members is $5.

Quilt Art's International Expressions Comes to Muncie

For the first time in the United States, International Arts and Artists introduces the work of Quilt Art, a unique group of 22 contemporary quilt artists from nine countries whose work ranges from traditional quilting techniques to modern methods of photo transfer and improvisation. Quilt Art is Europe's leading advocacy group for innovative quilt making.
The International Expressions exhibition features more than 35 quilts that include landscape scenes, still lifes, geometric constructions and abstract juxtapositions of color and form. While each member brings a distinctive approach to the medium, a reflection of their home countries' culture, geography and design traditions can also be discovered in the work.
Quilt Art has established a reputation for being at the forefront of contemporary textile art by maintaining integrity of expression and quality craftsmanship. The group has exhibited extensively in Europe since 1987, and more recently in Japan and Canada. Included in this exhibition are works by Linda Colsh (Belgium) and Inge Huber (Germany).

On the Importance of Play

One of the things I’ve learned about myself over the years is that I sometimes have a hard time giving myself permission to play. I recently invested in some books that have prompted me to take time to have fun in the studio.

My explorations with Traci Bunkers' Print and Stamp: 52 Ideas for Handmade, Upcycled Print Tools. My studio was already equipped with many of the odds and ends that Bunkers makes use of to develop print tools, but I certainly wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to scrounge around garage sales and “dollar” stores looking for more. I then spent several evenings working my way through many of the 52 lab assignments Bunkers includes in her book (some new, most not) and spring-boarding off of those to come up with a few of my own. This resulted in the creation of more than 50 new printing tools, some of which are shown in the accompanying image.

My attention then shifted to experimenting with a method described by Kelli Perkins in Stitch Alchemy: Combining Fabric + Paper for Mixed-Media Art, which combines fabric and paper in what I would describe as a "collage" process. Perkins recommends using linen as a "base," but I used black and natural canvas as that's what I happened to have on hand. Beginning with a base fabric on a larger sheet of freezer-paper (waxy-side up), diluted Elmer's glue (two parts water to one part glue) is used to saturate the base fabric, which also forms a light bond with the freezer paper and stabilizes the base. Then the same glue dilution is used to affix however many layers you wish to add. I used pages out of some really old books, old musical scores, various other papers (handmade, clips from magazines and newspapers, many varieties of tissue paper), sheer fabrics, string, yarn, package strapping, wire, jigsaw puzzle pieces, craft-foam shapes, motifs die-cut out of heavy paper, etc. I forced myself to just slap the layers on without too much deliberation and ended up falling in love with the way the layers formed some surprising colors and textures. Perkins recommends that, when finished, you use the freezer paper to transfer your work to a flat surface to dry (she says it will dry in a couple of hours, but here in Indiana it took almost two days). The sheets curl up a bit, but they can be ironed flat.

Perkins goes on to add other layers of surface design. That was my intention, too, but I had recently seen an on-line demo of some sort about adding multiple layers of blended paint colors, so I decided to try that. I loved the results so much I'm not sure I will add any printing. I have included images that show both the initial background and the background after adding some blended-paint layers.

Next, I turned my attention to experimenting with a technique described by Susan Wasinger in Fabricate: 17 Innovative Sewing Projects. She calls it "fusing" ("melting" would be a more accurate description) layers of those "crinkly" plastic bags together to create a background surface (in some ways similar to the collage sheets I did, but simpler) that can then be embellished with certain kinds of paints and/or cut up and used to construct something (in Wasinger's case, a nifty shopping bag). The good news was that the process did not, as I had anticipated, give off unpleasant fumes. The bad news was that, after about an hour and a half, I concluded that the process was more trouble than it was worth.

My explorations reminded me, once again, that play is an important activity, both for nurturing our creativity and for stimulating it!

Art exhibit in Louisville

In case any of you are planning a trip to Louisville in the next few weeks, you might consider visiting Holy Ground, a thesis exhibition by Joanne Weis.

Joanne is a recent graduate of Jane Dunnewold’s Art Cloth Mastery Program who is now completing a Master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Louisville. In 2009, she was awarded the SDA Student Award of Excellence. Holy Ground, an exploration of places throughout the world where Joanne has experienced a sense of “sacred space,” is sure to showcase some of Joanne’s signature surface design techniques and processes.

The exhibition is on display now through May 15 at the University’s Cressman Center for the Visual Arts, located at 100 E. Main (the corner of First and Main) in downtown Louisville. In addition to the art gallery, the Cressman Center is home to the Hite Art Institute's Glass Studios, which are also accessible during gallery hours.

Regional Meeting held at IMA

The Indiana SAQA members met at the IMA in Indianapolis on Tuesday, April 20th. They enjoyed meeting and greeting, lunch, a show and tell time, discussed future exhibits for their art and then toured the contemporary collection at the Indinapolis Museum of Art. Those attending were, Paulette Lancaster, Linda Henke, Charlie Charles, Caryl Sheutz, Daren Redman, Karen Hampton, Kate Lenkowski and guest Carol Bridges.
The group planned a retreat in Brown County at Carol's home for this fall and Daren explained the details of the upcoming exhibit at the Humanities Council.

Sandra Charles Takes Honors at Regional Fine Art Show.

Local fiber artist Sandra “Charlie” Charles took 5 honors at the SIAG Spring Art show in Rising Sun, Indiana, April 17th. Overall Award/Best of Show as well as 1st Place in Creative Technique was won by “Let Everyone Be Counted” a quilted fabric piece representing our diverse community for the 2010 Census. Her fabric landscape titled “View From Verastau” won 2nd Place in Creative Technique. “Rusted Cookies”, her velvet, wire, and rusted metal still life won Mixed Media 2nd Place. Sandra’s representation of woman/child abuse titled “Why?” was awarded 3rd Place in the 3-D category.

Exhibit Plans for 2011 - Indiana members and United Kingdom members

Daren Redman, rep for Indiana and Lynne Seaman, rep for the UK started plans to have a collaborative exhibit between the United Kingdom and Indiana members of SAQA. They talked about the size of the art quilts, venues, pairings and mailing cost. Daren will investigate venues in Indianapolis (perhaps the Indiana Humanities Council will want to host us again) and Lynne is thinking of what art show events are available to exhibit our art quilts.

When Lynne said it was costly to have exhibits in galleries in London, Daren suggested that Indiana SAQA members "adopt" the SAQA members in the UK. Linda said we could "twin". Daren and Lynne hit it off grandly, exchanging their art (which have the exact same colors in the compositions) and lunched together during the Reinvention Conference while brainstorming about future exhibits and exchanges.

The Reinvention Conference for SDA and SAQA was held in San Francisco. Your rep for Indiana, Daren Redman attended. On Thursday reps from around the nation and the UK attended. A ton of new ideas about how to update the Rep Handbook were flying around the room as well as a new idea about possibly having a Sister City Program. Daren will present this new idea to the Rep's representative, Pat Gould to see what she thinks. The brianstorm came about after Lynne Seaman from the United Kingdom stated, "it's hard to get exhibits in the UK and costly."

Sandra Charles Solo Show in Vevay Indiana

Sandra Charles of Rising Sun Indiana will have a solo show in Vevay, Indiana for the entire month of March and the first Friday (3-5-2010) will be the open house - 6-9pm, at Signatures Gallery. Switzerland County, Indiana is located along the beautiful Ohio River in Southeastern Indiana. Vevay is situated on State Road 56/156, which is part of the Nationally Designated "Ohio River Scenic Route".

The Indiana Humanities Council in Indianapolis is interested in displaying our art. Let me know if you are interested too.
The exhibit will be for a month some time this year. Let me know by February 1st. if you can exhibit one art piece.

Shibori Show by Redman in Bloomington, Indiana

Daren Redman's "Formations" has been chosen by The City of Bloomington and BEAD for the December exhibit.

"Formations" has evolved over three seasons of rain and sunshine and is made up of Daren's latest 3D Shibori forms and quilts made out of her hand dyed fabrics.

Opening reception is Thursday, December 4th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibition will be open for viewing from December 2 to December 30, 2009, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm. City Hall will be closed on Christmas Day.

The Atrium of City Hall is located at 401 North Morton Street, Bloomington, Indiana.
